Meantime Co. is pleased to present a two person exhibition of paintings and works on paper by

Amy Marino Lyons and Christina Sucgang titled The Energy Within. These artists share an interest in the conveyance of ethos through the depiction of space.

Marino Lyons was first inspired by a desk she stumbled upon. Like an archaeologist, she observed the tools, notes and stashes, and took a photograph to preserve the moment. Similarly, she noticed the disappearance of older homes in her Brooklyn neighborhood. She began painting these buildings as an attempt to not only preserve them, but to capture the personality they exude. Like the desks, she gazes upon an intimate space, giving us an alternate portrait of the owners. Capturing the energy of the spaces and places with line and color, Marino Lyons faithfully depicts them as emblems of that place and time, and the people who inhabit them.

Working within a set of self prescribed constraints, Sucgang starts a painting with a grid, and then begins to create disruptions to the structure. She breaks it down, opens it up, and changes the direction of the lines to articulate dimensionality, render abstraction, and convey energy and emotion. Using line, color, and texture, the dichotomies of chaos and order are made explicit. Sucgang’s paintings circumvent language to express a sense of being alive. She regards abstraction as the conveyance of deeply human ethos- such as the experience of beauty and spirituality. Like Marino Lyons, Sucgang’s work aims to make the invisible, visible.
